Fire Damages A Cranesville Home
Reported by: David Belmondo
Friday, Nov 7, 2008 @12:44pm EST

A wood stove is probably to blame for a fire this morning that destroyed a Cranesville home.

Several West County volunteer fire companies were called to 10359 High Street just after 8 Friday morning.

The owner of the house, Jacqueline Miller says she lit the wood burning stove and several minutes later the house began to fill with smoke.

By the time the first fire company arrived, flames had burned through the roof .

Miller was able to get her three children out of bed and everyone made it out safely.

The family had no insurance and a fund has been set up at the CNB Bank in Cranesville for those who would like to help.

Parrish, Maxfield

Parrish, Maxfield

Jacqueline Miller

Parrish was a great illustrator and painter with a fantasy feel. He was born in 1870 as Frederick Parrish, inside the city of Philadelphia. He eventually changed is given name to Maxfield in honor of his grandmother.

He started doodling on school papers and letters to family and friends when he was about 14 years old. Then he began to work for printing companies making illustrations for books, magazines and advertisements. He did all of his work from his own home, located in Cornish, New Hampshire. He studied art under a man named Howard Pyle. Parrish and Lydia where married in 1895, they then had 3 boys and 1 daughter. Then in 1900 he came down with tuberculosis and gave way to a nervous breakdown. The Parrishes, in 1905 hired Susan Lewin, who was only 16 at the time, to be a nanny for their oldest boy. Jean Parrish, the youngest of the children was born in 1911, and in that same year Maxfield and Lydia separated. Susan then became Maxfield’s lover.

Maxfield’s biggest influences for his artwork was, his dad Stephen (who to was an Artist) Edwin A. Abbey and N.?C.?Wyeth. His daughter Jean posed for many of Maxfield’s paintings in the 1920’s. Then to help make money to pay bills he started painting calendars in 1930 until 1960. He became acknowledged for his bright colors and now has a shade of blue named after him. He painted a mural on the Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia in his early career. Some of his paintings include: Hilltop, stars, Dreaming AKA October and The Knave of Hearts.

He spent most of his later years painting calendar landscapes for companies like General Electric. In 1960 he stops painting altogether, and he passed away 6 years later. Norman Rockwell had said he highly looked up to Parrish, and that Parrish was the “golden age of illustration”.

When he became sick his art still changed from just illustrations to also including beautiful oil painting. His daughter was the only one of his children who also loved art. He also had a long life from 1870 to 1966 dying at 96 years old. Maxfield Parrish was differently a great artist and devoted his whole life to his work.
